Warm up to these cold-weather getaways with your sweetheart in winter. If you’re planning a winter wedding, a honeymoon in paradise may seem like an obvious choice, but before you grab your flip-flops and sunscreen, check out these fun (yet chilly) possibilities.
1. Finnmark, Norway
Looking for a one-of-kind retreat that’s totally recyclable? Take a trip to the Alta Igloo Hotel in Finnmark, Norway. This luxe resort is made of snow and ice (including the bar glasses!), while beds consist of sleeping bags and reindeer fur. The hotel also includes ice sculptures, hot tubs, a sauna and a restaurant. Each spring, the hotel melts, is reconstructed, and reopens in January.
2. Quebec City, Canada
Known as the Paris of North America, Quebec is the kind of city that offers both cosmopolitan flavor with lots of winter fun. Auberge Le Vincent is an intimate and modern inn with luxe details like flat-screen TVs, goose down duvets and 400 thread-count sheets. With only 10 rooms, the service is highly personalized for each guest. Enjoy the hands-on treatment, then let loose at the Valcartier Vacation Village, a huge “winter playground.”
3. Niseko, Japan
Japan probably isn’t the first place you think of when it comes to skiing and snowboarding, but Australians have long known of the powder on Japan’s Niseko-Annupuri Mountain. An international ski town, Niseko is home to the Niseko Kogan Hotel, a ski resort with an East-meets-West aesthetic. Facilities include 59 rooms, multiple restaurants, shops and a spring-fed communal bath—perfect after a frigid day on the slopes.
4. Innsbruck, Austria
This former Olympic outpost sits on the edge of the Alps and offers a variety of top-notch downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding, as well as plenty of culture and history. Stay at the bright and cheery Austrotel Hotel, located near the city’s major shopping center. Hit the slopes or explore Innsbruck’s palaces, cathedral, Alpine Zoo or the nearby silver mines.
5. Santiago, Chile
Even summer brides have the option of a winter honeymoon. If you love the chill, then you might want to pack your skis and head to the Andes Mountains in Chile. The Valle Nevado Ski Resort is a trio of hotels that mimic a Swiss ski experience in the Southern Hemisphere. The resort lends itself to a relaxed atmosphere while offering guests access to exclusive restaurants, bars, a fitness center and a spa, as well as brilliant views from over a mile above sea level.
