Snow and ice creat hazardous travel, traffic interrupted in central Illinois

In addition to snow in Chicago, travel is being hampered by bad weather on the East Coast. Snow and ice are creating hazardous travel on central Illinois roads, though conditions tend to be worse in rural areas and north of Sangamon County, according to an update from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The early evening report indicated both interstates and secondary roads in Sangamon and Morgan counties are 50 percent covered. Secondary roads in Menard and Mason counties were reported 100 percent covered with snow or ice. Interstate 55 in Logan County had scattered slick spots, while secondary roads were half covered.

A chance of snow continues into Sunday for the Springfield area.

More than 300 flights have been canceled at O’Hare International Airport today as snow continues to fall across the Chicago area.

The Chicago Department of Aviation says airlines are reporting delays of 90 minutes or more in and out of O’Hare. Some flights were delayed up to five hours this afternoon.

Midway International Airport had delays averaging 60 minutes or more. A few flights had been canceled.
