Reaching agreement – voting consensus and final decision

Reaching agreement
There are also different ways of reaching a decision. Examples include:
voting – where the team chooses the option favoured by the majority of members
consensus – where the team reaches an agreement shared by all members
leader makes final decision – where the team discusses but the ultimate decision is made by the team leader.
Different approaches have their strengths and weaknesses. Consensus can take time, but everyone in the team will own the decision. Voting can reduce time, but may leave some team members feeling unhappy.
You also need to be aware of some difficulties in reaching agreement, including:
a monitoring group within the team blocking an option that others agree to
inertia – where the team finds it hard to agree and puts off the decision.
Now do this
Compare your own team with another team you know. How do the two teams reach agreement? Does the other team use procedures that could help your own team?

Following the decision through
Making a decision is not the end of the process. You have to implement it. This means:
identifying the actions needed
agreeing who will do what
agreeing when things will be done.
It makes sense to record all this so you can refer back to it later.
