Depression includes a range of symptoms, such as intimacy problems, loss of appetite and chronic pain. With care, you can treat your depression effectively and help the intimacy problems during depression.
It’s important to treat the root cause of the symptoms–the depression. While depression can feel overwhelming, there are many treatment methods available that can help.
Step 1 Consider antidepressants. There is a wide variety of antidepressants available which can correct chemical imbalances that contribute to depression. Some individuals take antidepressants for a short while to get their depression under control, whereas others remain on them for extended periods of time. You need a doctor’s prescription to get antidepressants.
Step 2 Talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking currently. Various medications, including some antidepressants, feature a reduced sex drive as a potential side effect. If your medication is contributing to your intimacy problems, your doctor may be able to prescribe an alternate medication that doesn’t feature this same side effect.
Step 3 See a mental health professional. While you can obtain an antidepressant prescription from your general practitioner, a mental health professional can help you work through life issues that may be causing your depression. Regular therapy can help you develop new perspective as well as coping skills that can help alleviate your depression. You also can work on your issues with intimacy during your sessions. Psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists all offer mental health counseling services.
Step 4 Discuss your intimacy issues with your partner. Solid communication about the issues can improve them. Once you’ve opened the channels of communication, you won’t be as likely to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with the situation. Also, talk to your partner about your depression in general. Often, depression improves when you discuss your feelings.
Step 5 Touch your partner. Intimacy problems caused by depression can be tough on both parties. Small actions, such as hugging or holding hands, can help heal gaps between you that may have been caused by the intimacy issues. Physical touch shows your partner that you find him desirable and care about him, despite the rough issues you are both dealing with.
Step 6 Say positive things to your partner. Every day, think of one thing that you love about your partner, and tell her what it is. If you make it a habit to focus on the positive aspects of your relationship, you will both feel better about it over time. As a result, you’ll be more inclined to share with each other, both emotionally and physically.
Step 7 Take care of yourself. Depression often can cause you to neglect yourself in various ways, worsening the situation. Instead, take the time and effort necessary to treat yourself well. Eat a healthy diet, get adequate nightly rest, and exercise daily. If you embrace a healthy, balanced lifestyle, you will support your healing from depression. As a result, your problems with intimacy will improve.
