My son is almost 10 and I’ve always known he was never quite the same as other kids.  He’s exceptionally intelligent; he’s in the school district’s gifted program, but his social skills seem to have stopped developing at about age 7.  Even the school principal, who’s known him since he was 3 said he’s always been out of step with the other kids.  He’s an extremely friendly boy but I see that diminishing in the last year or so as he gets constantly rebuked by his peers.  It’s breaking my heart to see him withdrawing.  We’re going to get a referral to a child psychologist and see what happens.  He seems to have many of the classic Asperger’s signs.

my 3 year old son has autistic symptom….but he was tested….they said he talked to good to be autistic…so i’m having him tested to see if he has asperger syndrome….do i need to be concerned?

I just recently discovered that my father-in-law has Asperger syndrom.  He is very isolated except at age 83 still the working as president at his own company.  But the funny thing is he does not make any business decisions, he is more a R&D person because he is so obssessed with the core thing his company does.  He has very unpredictable temper and his thoughts do not make sense and he cannot tell if other people are mad at him or running out of patience on him.  None of his children want to go back to him and his wife left him some 40 years ago.  At 81, with many possible mental deterriation due to the aging process in addition to the Asperger syndrom he has, I don’t know how to deal with his constant insensible requests he put on us, especially my husband.

THANK YOU, THIS INFORMATION MAKES ME FEEL LIKE THERE IS HOPE. MY SON HAS BEEN A VICTIM TO MANY PEOPLE AND NOW I KNOW WHY.

my son will be thirteen in september of 08. he was first diagnosed when he was about five when he was about to start school. when he was a toddler he had repetitive behavior habits and he was not speaking he would just whine and point when he wanted something. but other things when he was a baby he did on time or early like holding is bottle or cup feeding himself crawling and walking . the only thing that gave me a clue that something wasn’t right is not being able to speak and the way he would hold a toy or something and he would look at it oddly and from different angles. now my son has slight social issues and has a hard time communicating with others

My son has problems at school, he is  5 years old  diagnosed Asperger 7 months ago . He is defiant  with the teacher. He talked  her back….We work good behavior = prize/ sticker / time play WII… Initially we have some reports one two,  and he got 10 minutes minim for play……but lately he lost the all day. My husband put the blame on me. He suggest me,  be more strong and don’t let him talked to me back under any condition. What I can do? Next step is a “fisical punishment” and I don’t like that way. The privation of the game time doesn’t work. And I don’t know if he knows the difference or he can control it . I understand the teacher position .He doesn’t like to work in P.E  class and  write. What she can do? , he doesn’t want to come back at school . ….. Please I need to know how help my son. I don’t want he ruin his school and social life.¼br> Sorry My English I learning how to write, but I can read it.

I have a 7 year old son that at the age of 4 I noticed when he was in a daycare center he had issues making friends.  I thought maybe he was just shy but when he started kindergarden school he cried everyday when I dropped him off I was a bit concern that somethings just not right the school brought In a psycologist and they diagnosed my son with asperger syndrome I took him to his pediatrician with all concerns and he told me basically there was nothing wrong with my son.  My son had a problem with eating, he only liked certain foods he had issues making friends and the doctor still thought nothing was wrong with him and basically told me that I was a bad parent.  I still have not received a full diagnoses yet from a doctor about my child all of the signs are there of a child with aspergers syndrome what am I to do.  I have lost over 30 pounds just being stressed out over this child.  Can someone please help me and him.

I have a new grandbaby that lives with a stepsister with asperger’s. She watches him for her Mother a lot. I think she is dangerous for him. Recently he quit breathing while she was watching him. They said he had a high fever seizure. I’m not so sure. She is only 10 years old and has a lot of issues at school. Any comments? Please reply, Iris

I am a mother, grandmother, and teacher.  I have taught several students who have been diagnosed as having characteristics of asperger’s syndrom, but no one will ever say, “this child has asperger’s syndrom, and this is what you need to do for this child.”  Now, I suspect my grandson has asperger’s.  He is having a difficult time in school, he has poor social skills, seems obsessive about certain things, and the list goes on.  We have taken him to several doctors, but haven’t gotten many answers.  He was diagnosed with ADHD, but the problems are far more.  My heart goes out to him, and we need some answers.  Any suggestions as to where to start?

I am a father of a 6 year old boy he was diagnosed with adhd at age 3. He was tossed out of 2 private pre schools and then we got lucky there was special behavioral pre school he was excepted in.There we learned about asperger’s and found out he had all the signs. Had a doctor confirm our thoughts before starting public school this year. This has been a nightmare for my wife and I but I have learned alot about IDEA and section 504 . This is what gets your child free help in public schools in some cases as early as age 3. If you google IDEA you will find many sites that can help . My latest help has come from a book by Ross W. Greene Ph.D. called The Explosive Child. This book was an eye opener for us it discribes our son and his actions all the way. He has another book that will help you work with your child our copy should be in any day now and looking forward to it. Hope this info can help some of you stay positive your not alone.

I have a 10 year old son who I believe has Asberger’s Syndrome.  I’ve always thought there was “something” not right with him, but he is “normal” enough-just a difficult child.  It started as a baby – he never played with toys.  As a toddler he had to repeat things in 3’s or a tantrum would follow.  When he started school he had trouble making friends – would knock down a child’s sand castle and then not understand why he got in trouble because he was only “try to play with him”.  In Kindergarten, he didn’t speak until November.  He is always the kid who has his name on the board – and sometimes he would get blamed for something and he wasn’t even in school that day.  He is now 10 and still getting in trouble.  The teachers think he knows what he is doing wrong, but I think he is misunderstood all the time.  I don’t know where to turn to….he now has such a low self esteem and is starting to bully other kids.  I have always suggested holding him back a grade because of his social immaturity, but he gets straight A’s and the teachers said that he would just cause more trouble because he would get bored.

Lea  you should take him to a very experienced developmental pediatrician with austism spectrum experience or directly to a D.A.N. doctor.

Seeking help for your child can be frustrating, especially if you don’t live in a community that has a pediatrician or doctor that specializes in autism spectrum disorders or behavioral specialists.  Several states have other places you can turn to for help.  If you have an infant or toddler and you have suspicions they may have asperger’s or any type of behavior disorder see if you county has some sort of Infant and Toddler Services.  Many public school districts have Parents as Teachers (or similar programs) who can help hook you up with the specialists you need, call your local school for a phone number.  If your child is school age, call the principal or school psychologist and tell them you want to set up a meeting discussing your child’s problems and to see if your child qualifies for an IEP (Individualized Education Plan).  I hope this helps some of you.  Keep trying.

Ia 15yr old son who was diagnosed at age of 9yrs with asbergers by his school psycologist she basically figured out all of my the reasons why my child was having such difficult with social skills reading comprehsion and repetative behaviors he would als talk to himsef and burst out with laughter for no apparent reason or he would laugh at things that really werent considered comical during conversation all these things happen in grade school. he’s a junior now at a top magnet program and is doing well still has some social skills to work on and has an instructional aide to accompany him to help with his work in each of his classesbut i thank God were not at the begin stages were some where in the middle i anyone understands what i mean you learn something new everyday with a child of asbergers just be encouraged people and trust God with ur children! and study your child as if your reading your favorite novel the more you know about him the more youll understand and youll have days like me when youll blame yourself for all of their problems but you must realize your not to blame! it is what it is! so keep fighting! for ur child and his/her well being!not matter what these crazy teachers or doctors may say youre the preson whose knows and sees your child intimatly on daily basis! study and write down things you find interestin about ur child if it concerns u or too unusual ask questions get help.iahve ways to go with my child but he a fighter too so that helps a lot! althouhg  i believe hes going through the teenager cycle thing but that normal too but then whats really normal? becuase he eats at the same time daily irons his clothes at the same time for school daily bathes at the same time daily and goes to bed at the exact same time to me thats brilliant! whenever theres a change in his shcedule i have to let him know inadvance so he wont freakout but even when i forget to tell things that he may have a hard time to process my son becomes a trooper and hell ask questins but when i sit down and explian why mother forgot cook his favorite meal hell say its alright or youll do better next time huh mom and hes leraned to laugh it off . PRAYER WORKS.

I have a very dear friend whose daughter I fear may have aspergers. The girl is 4 years old. In daycare she has been called the loner. She seems, to me, to be way behind developmentaly. She is intelligent but lacks social and motor skills. She rides her tricycle in circles, never forward. She has sudden outbursts and cannot explain why she is yelling or crying. I think that with working with her she has great potential to overcome alot of it. The problem is her mother that i love dearly seems to think that she is just being naughty or she explains it all away as being her age. My son is 4 and there are things that I know that are not normal behavior for 4. I do not know how to talk to her about it. Her daughter is not in preschool yet but she was screened recently. She was told that her daughter was behind. My friend was mad and said “they were trying to tell me that my daughter is retarded” I informed her that in no way were they telling her her daughter was retarded just behind. Instead of looking into this and trying to do what ever she could to help her daughter she is in denial and has chosen to stay mad at the woman that screened her daughter. Do I keep my mouth shut and wait for professionals to bring it up to my friend once she starts school or do I risk making my friend want to end our friendship and bring some information to her attention. I truely believe that her daughter would have great potential if she gets help now. I ask myself every day if I should do anything. During the girls screening she was asked to put a block in a bucket everytime she heard a beep in her headphones.  After it was  explained to her several times she just sat there unable to comprehend what to do. My son recently had a very extensive hearing screening with an audiologist and he was able to understand every step of the way. This little girl with repeat over and over again that she is in trouble that she is a bad girl that she is in time out , and this is when she is not in trouble and  she is not being corrected . She will also say sorry many many times in a row. It breaks my heart to watch her sometimes. If she is put in time out she will scream long after she is out of timeout. I can see her trying so hard. Her mother on the other hand remains frustrated and unable to admit there is a problem. How would I bring it up to her?? Please help.
